Frequently Asked Questions

What is HeyGen for, and who should use it?
HeyGen is an AI avatar video platform. It’s built for marketing teams scaling video ads and product demos, L&D teams producing multilingual training, course creators, and agencies.
Can I use HeyGen videos commercially, including in paid ads?
Yes. HeyGen’s terms permit commercial use, including paid advertising on Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn, as long as your inputs comply with its content guidelines. All paid plans include commercial rights; the free plan permits commercial use but leaves a HeyGen watermark on exports.
Do I need consent to create an avatar of a specific person?
Yes, and this is enforced, not just advised. HeyGen’s moderation policy requires explicit consent from the individual (the “Actor”) for any custom avatar, backed by liveness detection and consent verification during creation.
Is HeyGen compliant enough for enterprise/regulated use?
HeyGen states it meets SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, CCPA, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and alignment with the EU AI Act.
Will HeyGen use my content to train its AI models?
By default, HeyGen’s privacy policy says user input may be used to improve and train the models that power its services, under a legitimate interest basis. However, you can request to opt out of this training by contacting HeyGen. Enterprise customers can negotiate DPAs that restrict data use.
What content is off-limits?
HeyGen prohibits content that is deceptive (misleading deepfakes, fake news), impersonates people without consent, is sexually explicit, depicts minors, promotes violence or hate, infringes copyright, or is used for political campaigning or lobbying. Certain sensitive educational or religious themes are conditional, allowed only with clear labeling and appropriate use.
Where can I host or publish the finished video?
You can download the MP4 and host it anywhere (YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, your own site), or use HeyGen’s embeddable player links. Generated videos and assets are typically retained on HeyGen’s infrastructure for a limited window (roughly 30–90 days) before deletion.
Does it integrate with my existing stack?
On Business and above, HeyGen offers native connections to Zapier, Make, n8n, and HubSpot, plus a direct API for programmatic generation. Note that API usage is billed separately from web subscriptions.
