Editorial Guidelines
How we test, score, and stay independent.
Our Promise
We don’t list tools. We test them — and our rankings are never for sale.
Every tool in this directory earns its place by doing real work for a real business team. No vendor pays for a ranking, a rating, or a kind word. If a tool is in our top spots, it got there because it held up when we pushed it — and we’ll show you how we know.
How We Evaluate Tools
Every tool is reviewed one of two ways
Hands-on tested
An editor ran the tool’s core jobs inside a live account with our own data. Scores, screenshots, and failure notes come from that session.
Assessed without hands-on testing
The tool is paywalled, sales-gated, or demo-only. We assessed it from documentation, a guided demo, and verified customer accounts — and we list exactly which.
How We Score
Four criteria, weighted. They are not equal — being genuinely safe for a business to adopt outranks everything else, and the bars below are the real weights we apply.
01
Business-friendly
Built for business users, not hobbyists. Admin controls, role permissions, audit trails, data governance, and a compliance posture your legal team can live with.
40%
02
Job quality
How well it does the core jobs — measured on our test tasks, not on the vendor’s demo script.
25%
03
Cost
Value for a business your size, at the tier you’d actually buy — seats, usage caps, and the add-ons that turn out to be mandatory.
20%
04
Feature depth
Real coverage of the workflow, not a longer gimmick list. Depth counts only where it removes work.

Security, Compliance & Data Trust
Tools that publicly publish their compliance and security posture rank higher than those that stay silent. Transparency is the signal we reward — a vendor that openly lists its certifications, retention settings, and data-handling terms is easier to trust than one that doesn’t. We record these as the vendor’s own published claims; we don’t independently audit or verify that each certification is current or that the underlying report exists.

Independence & How We Make Money
We make money the way a publication should: from readers and from clearly marked advertising. Never from the ranking itself.
Rankings are never for sale
No vendor can buy, negotiate, or fast-track a position. There is no rate card for a score, and no package that includes one.
Affiliate links, disclosed
Some links earn us a commission. Knowing a commission rate doesn’t change how a tool is scored — rankings are based on the tool’s merit, and a partnership never buys a better position.
Sponsored content is labeled
Paid placements are marked “Sponsored,” visually separated from editorial, and excluded from rankings and roundups.
No vendor approval
Vendors may correct factual errors before publication, but that never touches our assessment methodology or review process.
Corrections & Vendor Right Of Reply
If we got something wrong, tell us. Anyone — reader, customer, or vendor — can report an error at admin@moderntechstack.com with the page and the detail in question.
We acknowledge every report within 5 business days and resolve factual corrections within 10 business days.

How We Use AI
Human in the loop
We use AI to help with research scaffolding, transcript summaries, and first-draft structure. No review, score, or ranking is generated by a model. An editor runs the tests, writes the verdict, and takes responsibility for every published word.
