Pros and Cons

What Works Well
  • The strongest fit for corporate training, onboarding, and compliance at scale
  • Best-in-class multilingual localization (repeatedly cited as the #1 reason teams stay)
  • ‘Edit a script to update a video’ removes re-shoot cost entirely
  • Largest avatar library; strong brand-consistency controls
WHAT could be better
  • Avatars still look slightly stiff in motion; weak for emotional/persuasive/sales content
  • Minute-based caps make it expensive as volume grows; custom avatars add ~$1,000/yr
  • Not a full-stack AI video generator; no music library, thin non-corporate templates, poor for social/B-roll-heavy content
  • Built-in script writer and screen recorder underperform dedicated tools

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Synthesia best suited for?
Synthesia turns a script, PowerPoint, PDF, or URL into an AI-avatar video entirely in-browser. Its sweet spot is business communication, corporate training, onboarding, internal comms, and multilingual explainers.
Is Synthesia priced and licensed for team use?
Synthesia charges per editor seat; every teammate who creates or edits videos needs their own paid subscription.
What are the content restrictions I should know about?
Synthesia is explicitly for professional, business-related content. It prohibits political, sexual, personal, criminal, and discriminatory scripts, and blocks news-style content or political disinformation. Every video passes through content moderation before delivery.
Is it compliant for enterprise and regulated industries?
Yes. Synthesia reports SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, and GDPR compliance, with data stored in AWS (Ireland) and a Data Processing Agreement available.
Will my scripts or avatar data train Synthesia’s models?
Synthesia’s terms state that customer data and custom avatars are not used to improve or fine-tune AI components beyond the services the customer uses, and biometric verification data is deleted (usually within minutes of matching). Custom-avatar biometric data is retained only while the avatar is live or as the customer instructs, then destroyed.
What happens to my content and avatar if I leave?
You can request deletion at any time; Synthesia says content is deleted from its databases when you stop using the service, and avatar owners can request their likeness and data be entirely removed.
Is a free plan usable for real business output?
The free plan is for evaluation only; a small monthly minute allowance, limited stock avatars, and a Synthesia watermark. You can’t publish customer-facing work from it. Removing the watermark and downloading MP4s requires at least the Starter tier.
