ABOUT US

The tested short list of AI business software

not another endless directory.

We test AI tools and software hands-on, then rank only the few that genuinely fit a small or mid-market business — on cost, quality, and feature set. Less scrolling. More deciding.

Filtering AI Tools

400

We build this for small and mid-sized businesses — the plumbers, marketing agencies, law firms, clinics, restaurants, and online stores that need good software but don’t have a procurement team or a spare month to evaluate it. The needs of a twelve-person shop are not the needs of a Fortune 500, and most software coverage is written for the latter. Everything here is filtered through one question: does this actually work for a business your size, at a price that makes sense, without enterprise bloat you’ll never use?

Why we exist

The software market is enormous, and most of it is genuinely good at something — that’s exactly the problem. When every tool has a polished landing page and five stars somewhere, “more options” stops being helpful and becomes noise. We don’t exist to discredit the market; plenty of tools we don’t list are perfectly good, just not the best fit for a business your size in a given workflow. What we do is the narrowing — testing, comparing, and cutting the field down to the handful actually worth your time and money.

& more markets worked in

Behind The Modern Tech Stack is a team that has spent more than a decade building and running online marketplaces and platforms — across event ticketing, blue-collar hiring, car listings, and online therapy, reaching over 100 million monthly active users. We’ve owned nearly every layer of what makes a product work: onboarding, listing quality, fraud and KYC, trust and verification, buyer discovery, purchase funnels, and end-to-end payments.

Evaluating business software isn’t a side project for us — it’s the job we’ve done for years. We’ve been on the buying side of these decisions: choosing the tool, integrating it, and living with the consequences when it underdelivered. That instinct is what we bring to every review.

The Standard

Our Bar for Inclusion

Not every tool makes it onto the site. A tool earns its place only if it clears the bar on four fronts.

Genuinely one of the best for the job

We only list tools that rank among the top options for their workflow on feature set and quality of output. If it can’t compete with the leaders in what it actually produces, it doesn’t belong on a short list.

Ready for real business use

A tool has to be ready in every sense that matters — sound on the legal and commercial side, with the security, reliability, and terms a company can stand behind. Promising-but-not-ready tools wait until they’re genuinely business-ready.

Every tool is tested

We assess tools hands-on, against the workflow they’re meant to serve — not from spec sheets or vendor marketing. Scores come from using the product the way you would.

The price is right for your size

We weigh cost through the lens of a small or mid-market budget. When a tool is expensive, we do the secondary research to confirm the value genuinely justifies the spend before recommending it.

The ranked shortlist for the job
We research the market the way you’d describe your own business: an industry, made up of the workflows that run it, each served by the tools that do the job. Rather than dumping a 400-tool directory on you, we go deep one industry at a time — starting with marketing agencies and the core workflows behind them. Every tool is tested and ranked for a specific job, so what you get is a short list that actually fits how you work.

How we stay independent

Some links on this site are affiliate links — we may earn a commission if you sign up through us, at no extra cost to you, and it’s how we keep the site free to read. But money never buys a ranking. No vendor can pay to be listed, to rank higher, or to score better, and we regularly rank tools that pay us nothing above tools that do. Placement is earned on merit, full stop.
